The President of the Student Physiological Association of Nigeria (SPAN), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Chapter, Abubakar Yau Al Hassan, has called on students to embrace voluntary blood donation, describing it as a life-saving act that benefits the wider community.
Speaking during the association's 2026 Annual Blood Drive, Hassan said the programme has become a tradition for the chapter, having been held successfully for three consecutive years since 2024.
He explained that this year's theme, "Saving Lives Starts With You," is aimed at encouraging students to donate blood and support patients in need.
He noted that beyond blood donation, the exercise also provided free medical services, including Body Mass Index (BMI) assessment, vital signs checks, malaria screening, hepatitis testing, and blood group determination.
He added that SPAN collaborated with the university management and SICK BAY to offer subsidised genotype testing for just ₦1,000, compared to the usual market price of between ₦3,000 and ₦4,000, to enable more students to know their genotype status.
Hassan commended the large turnout of students, describing their participation as evidence that Nigerian youths are committed to humanitarian service and willing to make meaningful contributions to society.
He urged students to always think beyond personal interests and work towards the well-being of their communities, stressing that such selfless service helps build a better future.
The SPAN president also expressed appreciation to the management of Ahmadu Bello University for its continuous support of student initiatives.
He thanked the Vice-Chancellor and other university officials for creating an enabling environment that promotes academic excellence, moral development, and community service among students.
