The remarkable rise of Professor Kabir Bala from a Graduate Assistant to the 12th substantive Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, stands as a testament to dedication, academic excellence, and visionary leadership that has left an enduring impact on one of Africa's leading universities.
Born on January 7, 1964, in Unguwan Sarki, Kaduna State, Professor Bala built his academic career entirely at ABU, earning a Bachelor's degree in Building in 1985, a Master's degree in Building Services in 1990, an MBA in 1998, and a Ph.D. in Construction Management in 2001.
He also expanded his international academic exposure as a visiting scholar at the University of Abertay, Dundee, Scotland.
His career at ABU began in December 1987 as a Graduate Assistant, and through commitment and academic distinction, he rose to become a Professor of Construction Management in 2007.
Before becoming Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bala served the university in several strategic leadership positions, including Head of the Department of Building, Director of Academic Planning, Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration). On May 1, 2020, he assumed office as ABU's 12th substantive Vice-Chancellor and successfully completed his five-year tenure on April 30, 2025, handing over the administration to Professor Adamu Ahmed.
Beyond the university, Professor Bala made significant contributions to the building profession as Chairman of the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON), where he served from 2013 to 2021, promoting professionalism, ethical practice, and higher standards within Nigeria's construction industry.
During his tenure as Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bala spearheaded wide-ranging reforms focused on transparency, academic excellence, research development, infrastructure expansion, and the protection of the university's vast land and other assets.
His administration further enhanced ABU's standing as one of Nigeria's and Africa's foremost institutions of higher learning.
His inspiring journey from Graduate Assistant to Vice-Chancellor remains a powerful example of perseverance, integrity, and visionary leadership, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations of scholars and leaders.
