The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Education, Zaria, Professor Yahaya Isa Bunkure, has called on newly admitted students to embrace the teaching profession with excellence, discipline, and a strong sense of moral responsibility.
He made the call during the maiden matriculation ceremony for the first set of undergraduate students for the 2025/2026 academic session, held at M. I. Maccido Hall in Zaria.
In his address, Professor Bunkure described teaching as a noble, impactful, and nation-building profession that requires not only academic excellence but also sound character and social responsibility.
He reminded the students that their training at the university goes far beyond classroom learning, as they are being groomed academically, morally, and socially to contribute meaningfully to national development through the teaching profession.
The Vice-Chancellor stressed that the award of degrees at the university would not be based solely on academic performance, but also on students’ conduct and character throughout their stay.
He urged the students to develop a genuine passion for teaching and to strive for excellence in all their endeavours.
Professor Bunkure further highlighted the institution’s commitment to digital transformation in learning.
According to him, the university has implemented e-learning and blended learning systems to equip students with relevant 21st-century skills.
The introduction of Computer-Based Testing (CBT) for examinations, he noted, aligns the institution with global best practices.
He advised the students to adhere strictly to university rules and regulations, maintain at least 75 percent lecture attendance, and shun cultism, examination malpractice, drug abuse, and all forms of misconduct.
He emphasised that the university operates a zero-tolerance policy for indiscipline, and violations would attract appropriate sanctions. Students were also advised to maintain cordial relationships with host communities, carry their identification cards at all times, and remain security-conscious.
As a University of Education, he reiterated that the primary mandate of the institution is to train teachers who will shape future generations.
He also announced that the university recently promoted 43 Chief Lecturers to the rank of Professors, reflecting its strong academic foundation and commitment to excellence.
Professor Bunkure concluded by calling on both staff and students to align themselves with the mission, vision, and core values of the university in order to build an institution known for excellence, discipline, innovation, and service.
