The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has unveiled a 110kVA solar power installation at the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Kongo Campus in Zaria, as part of four constituency projects aimed at supporting education, employment and essential services in the Zaria Federal Constituency.
Abbas made this known in his remarks at the unveiling of the solar systems and the commissioning and groundbreaking of Development projects in Zaria, Kaduna State.
According to him, the projects include the 110kVA solar installation at ABU Kongo Campus, the Zaria Education Development Association (ZEDA) International Conference Hall, a modern skills acquisition centre, and office accommodation for the National Directorate of Employment (NDE).
He said the projects were designed to address practical needs within the community, particularly reliable electricity for essential institutions, improved facilities for learning and public debate, vocational training and closer access to Federal Government employment services.
The Speaker explained that the solar systems would support health facilities, schools, security posts, mosques and churches, stressing that reliable electricity was important for healthcare delivery, education and security.
He also disclosed that young people from Zaria had been trained to install and maintain the solar systems, saying the initiative was intended not only to provide equipment but also to build local technical capacity.
On the skills acquisition centre, Abbas said training must translate into employment and sustainable livelihoods, expressing the hope that young men and women would acquire practical skills that would enable them to solve problems, serve customers and earn legitimate incomes.
He further said the new facilities at ABU Kongo and ZEDA were expected to strengthen learning and community activities, noting that Zaria had historically been a centre of learning and therefore required facilities capable of supporting that role.
The Speaker also spoke about the need for continuity in government policies and development programmes, saying projects and policies that had begun addressing existing challenges should be improved rather than abandoned.
He further challenged political groups seeking to replace the current administration to present concrete plans on how they would address healthcare, employment, roads and community security, saying political objectives should be accompanied by clear development plans.
Abbas said his assessment of leadership should focus on practical outcomes, including whether clinics have electricity, farmers can access markets, young people can obtain training and employment, and children can learn in functioning schools.
He said the projects were part of his efforts over the past three years to attract investment to Zaria and take the constituency's needs to the Federal Government, adding that the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had enabled some of the initiatives.
The Speaker also appealed to the people of Zaria to support the completion of ongoing projects and said he would continue to listen to their needs and present them before the Federal Government.
