The Kaduna State Chapter of the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria, MWAN, has marked its 50th anniversary with a tree-planting exercise at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, ABUTH, Zaria.
The exercise formed part of activities commemorating five decades of the association’s contributions to medicine, healthcare and community development.
The team, led by the Chairperson, Professor Hafsat Sulaiman Maiwada, was received by the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, CMAC, Professor Muhammad Ibrahim Zaria, on behalf of the Chief Medical Director, Professor Ahmed Umdagas Hamidu.
Speaking during the exercise, Professor Maiwada said the tree-planting initiative was aimed at contributing to efforts to combat climate change, promote environmental health and provide a greener and healthier environment for patients and staff of the hospital.
She explained that the 50th anniversary was not only an occasion to celebrate five decades of service by women in medicine, but also an opportunity to renew the association’s commitment to sustainable healthcare and community development.
Professor Maiwada disclosed that MWAN had been planting trees in different parts of Kaduna State, including some schools around Zaria, adding that ABUTH was selected because of its strategic role in healthcare delivery in Northern Nigeria and its large land area, which requires adequate greening.
In his remarks, the CMAC, Professor Muhammad Ibrahim Zaria, appreciated MWAN for the gesture and for including ABUTH among the institutions selected for its 50th anniversary activities.
He described the initiative as timely, noting that climate change, air pollution, flooding and erosion continue to pose significant threats to public health.
Professor Zaria said the exercise was also in line with the objectives of the United Nations on climate change and the Federal Government’s green initiatives.
He assured the association that the hospital management would provide the necessary care and maintenance to ensure that the trees grow to maturity.
The event ended with the symbolic planting of trees by the MWAN Chairperson, the CMAC and members of staff of ABUTH.
