The Postgraduate College of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has formally matriculated 3,600 postgraduate students for the 2024/2025 academic session.
The matriculation ceremony, held at the university campus, marked a significant milestone for the Postgraduate College as it continues to expand its academic offerings and student population.
Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Professor Adamu Ahmed, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the education sector at all levels.
“No doubt, Ahmadu Bello University has fulfilled its vision of becoming a true postgraduate university. In line with this, the Postgraduate School was officially renamed the Postgraduate College earlier this year. Today, the university runs the highest number of postgraduate programmes in the country — 529 in total — with a postgraduate student population exceeding 7,000,” he stated.
Prof. Ahmed assured the students that the university is committed to ensuring timely graduation for all postgraduate students.
“The administration is fully aware of the challenges of postgraduate studies and has put in place necessary measures to support your academic journey. All programmes have been critically reviewed to ensure relevance to contemporary societal needs,” he added.
The Vice-Chancellor encouraged students to maintain discipline, focus on their studies, and contribute to a peaceful and conducive learning environment.
“University education is both an exciting journey and a serious responsibility. Your primary objective here is to acquire knowledge and skills that will prepare you for a meaningful future. Achieving this goal requires peace, stability, and an environment conducive to learning and character development,” he said.
Prof. Ahmed also warned students against engaging in social vices such as examination malpractice, cultism, drug abuse, and indecent dressing.
“As you pursue your academic goals, your lecturers are committed to guiding you toward the realization of your career aspirations. I urge you to stay focused and uphold the values of the university,” he advised.
He further disclosed that the university is deepening partnerships and linkages with various organisations to enhance its postgraduate programmes.
“Our goal is to make postgraduate education at ABU student-centered, curriculum-responsive, and entrepreneurial-oriented, so it can contribute meaningfully to national development and improve the lives of our people,” he concluded.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Provost of the Postgraduate College, Professor Mohammed Nasir Shuaibu, revealed that the university received 6,953 postgraduate applications for the 2024/2025 academic session.
He said that after a rigorous screening process, 5,384 candidates were recommended for admission, out of which 3,587 successfully completed their screening and over 95 percent have concluded registration.
Breakdown of the admitted students includes 725 PhD students, 57 MPhil candidates, 2,558 Master’s degree students, and 371 professional diploma students.
Prof. Shuaibu urged the new students to make the most of the opportunity by dedicating themselves to hard work and adhering strictly to the university's rules and regulations.
