Senator Simon Bako Lalong says Alumni Associations are not only beneficiaries of higher education but also Bodies as Vital Promoters of National Cohesion
He stated this in paper presentation at the 18th Fre-Annual General Meeting Lecture of ABU Alumni Association 2025 held at the University’s Assembly Hall.
The Senator who is the former Governor of Plateau State said, through their networks, expertise and influence alumni strengthen institutions, mentor younger generations, foster a shared national identity and support socio-economic progress.
According to him by embracing their roles as leaders, innovators and ambassadors of unity alumni of prestigious institutions like Ahmadu Bello University can drive peaceful coexistance, national cohesion and sustainable prosperity.
Senator (Dr) Bako Lalong noted that the Legacy of universities such as ABU continues to shape Nigeria’s intellectual, social and civic landscape, and it is the responsibility of alumni to ensure that this legacy translates into tangible national transformation.
He therefore called for their reaffirmed commitment to a united, peaceful and prosperous Nigeria one where education remains the cornerstone of national progress and development.
Dr. Lalong also said, Nigeria’s progress is inherently tied to the collective responsibility of its citizens to poster unity, development and good governance.
He maintained that alumni associations occupied a strategic position to influence national transformation through their networks, expertise and social capital.
By leveraging their collective experience alumni can act as catalysts for both social cohesion and sustainable development.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the occasion who is the Minister of Defence Alhaji Badaru Abubakar said the alumni gathering is a home coming and expressed appreciation for the wonderful reunion.
The Minister said, the present administration is working tirelessly in ensuring security of lives and property of every Nigerians is guaranteed .
According to him, more successes were recorded by the Nigerian Armed Forces by eliminating criminal elements in our land.
Subsequently, most of the difficult areas that Boko Haram insurgency, Kidnapping, Banditry and other criminal activities that has disorganized communities have now been flushed out and getting normal life there.
The Minister assured Nigerians that present administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu will overcome the security challenges in the country.
Also in his remarks, the Vice Chancellor Ahmadu Bello University Professor Ahmed Adamu said the University’s Alumni is unique and well focus which comes to their support.
He said, the University management and entire community are proud with the alumni becouse of its consistent in the University.
Earlier in his welcome address the National President of the Alumni Association Malam Adamu Mamma Kontagora ( Barden Kontagora) who expressed appreciation for the successful hosting the Pre-AGM Lecture .
He said, the present of highly placed personalities such as Minister of Defence and Senator Simon Bako Lalong and His Highness the emir of Zazzau Malam Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli is a very honour to have them despite their tight schedules.
He welcome all alumni for the 2025 Annual General Meeting.
