The Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Professor Adamu Ahmed, has charged newly admitted postgraduate students to embrace research, innovation, integrity and the responsible use of technology in addressing the challenges facing Nigeria and the wider world.
Professor Ahmed gave the charge at the matriculation ceremony for the 2025/2026 fresh postgraduate students of the Postgraduate College, Ahmadu Bello University, held at the Postgraduate College Auditorium, Main Campus, Samaru, Zaria.
The Vice-Chancellor said ABU, with its long-standing tradition of research, teaching and community service, has a responsibility to produce knowledge and develop solutions to the problems confronting society.
He urged the new students to see postgraduate education as more than an opportunity to obtain academic qualifications, but as a platform to develop their talents, conduct meaningful research and contribute practical solutions to national and global challenges.
Professor Ahmed also encouraged the students to understand and utilise emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, responsibly, while maintaining the highest level of academic integrity.
According to him, technology should be used as a tool to support research and innovation rather than as a substitute for independent thinking, creativity and academic responsibility.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Provost of the Postgraduate College, Professor O. O. Okunbanjo, welcomed the newly matriculated students and congratulated them on becoming members of the postgraduate community of Ahmadu Bello University.
Professor Okunbanjo said the Postgraduate College is committed to providing an environment that supports quality research, academic excellence, innovation and the successful completion of postgraduate programmes.
He urged the students to uphold the core values of the university, including integrity, discovery, service and excellence, stressing that these values should guide them throughout their academic journey...
The Provost urged the students not to see their postgraduate programmes merely as a means of obtaining degrees, but as an opportunity to acquire knowledge, develop solutions and make meaningful contributions to society.
He assured the newly matriculated students of the College’s commitment to supporting them throughout their academic journey, while urging them to maintain the standards expected of postgraduate students of Ahmadu Bello University.

Also speaking, the Dean of Students, Professor Junaidu B. Sahalu, charged the new students to respect the school's diversity, as it is the strength of the university.
The Director, Counselling and Human Development Centre, Professor Hadiza Ahmed Tukur, and other heads of units of the university, including University Health Services, Sports, Security, and IAIICT, equally made brief presentations on the services they offer.
Our Correspondent Hassan Ibrahim reports that More than 6,000 newly admitted postgraduate students of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, have taken the institution’s matriculation oath, marking the commencement of their academic journey for the 2025/2026 academic session.
